Match Reports

BERKS U19 BOYS

7 OCTOBER 2007

VERSUS SURREY

Won 3 – 1.

The slightly stuttering U19 Machine rolled on – starting line picking itself with only 11 arrivals – lucky actually as my set of blue shirts only had 11 in it. " Senior pros new to driving turned up 7 mins into game. Umpires nearly contrived to make a clean well fought game into a dirty one by sending off 3 or was it 4 boys with absolutely no intent. One Ump presented Surrey with goal on the stroke of HT despite us being well in control – but we swept back after the break to win 3-1. Goalscorers were Dougie Clayton – previously of Middlesex but who had never ever won a county game, with 2 clinical finishes from a total of 3 yards – and Alex Land with a real belter from the edge of the circle. Man of the Match – Anthony Jones (with Phil Cowell a very close 2nd)

BERKS U16 BOYS

7 OCTOBER 2007

VERSUS SURREY

Won 2 – 1.

Scorers for Berkshire: Jack Hardy, 2 min open, Dom Stanford, 48, PC

Berks U16 started where we finished last season with a game against Surrey. This year though Berks had everything to play for whereas last year only Surrey could win the championship.

The match started with the ball going well back into Surrey's half. Within the first two minutes, Param Bhangu, on debut, had a shot on goal, closely followed by the first goal from Jack Hardy. 1-0. with a typical drive left and a fantastic reverse stick bullet into the far corner.  Surrey responded strongly and despite good possession never really threatening the Berks goal. Berks then had their best spell of the first half, retaining possession and creating 3 PC opportunities. Surrey then produced their best period of the game, with Berks aiding their own problems with to many loose passes.

Surrey clearly worried that the minnows from Berkshire were going to ruin their start of the season and applied a high press for the entire second half.  This had 2 major effects, a series of fast breaks and outstanding chances and shots, mainly from Jack, but also Ali Parkes and Param, for Berkshire that either went wide or were well saved. One notable bullet, hit their keeper squarely on the forehead and deflected over the cross bar, the pitch fence and was last seen half way to Horsham. The second effect was a series of outstanding saves from Berks man of the match James Bowler in goal.

Eventually the pressure told (5 corners in quick succession) and a well struck corner brought Surrey level. However as they pressed for the winner Berks still were creating the better chances and from one attack were awarded their only corner of the second period. A well worked corner resulted with Dom Stanford in space and his hard slap left them with no chance to save the shot or the match.

Probably a slightly flattering result on possession, but not goal mouth incidents and perhaps a fair result would have been 9 -8. To Berkshire of course.
